cheap solar systems

How Cheap Should A Solar System Be?

So, you’re looking at getting solar. Good on you! Not only does it save you money, but it also helps our beautiful planet by reducing emissions.

Solar is a great and obvious choice for most homeowners and business owners.

What’s not obvious is how much you should pay. The solar industry is ruthless. For many companies, it’s a race to the bottom. For others, it’s about looking after the customer for life.

You’ve most likely been looking at systems by now. A quick search online will reveal a plethora of companies who are desperate for your business.

Once you receive a few quotes, you’ll notice something strange…the price.

Some companies charge $3990 for a 6kW system, others charge $8990.

But why?

How do you tell the difference? Especially if they’ re selling the same brands…

Why is there such a difference in price?

Many reasons influence this.
If they’re a high volume, low margin installer, they buy and install in bulk. This passes the savings on to you. Like Costco.

Another scenario is they’re a low margin installer who does a rushed job and runs for the hills afterward – leaving you with no aftercare.

Some of these installers use high-quality brands, others don’t.

There are a few companies that advertise cheap systems with high-quality parts. In the fine print, they have added a clause allowing them to swap out the panels and inverters for different brands if they choose.

This means you’re paying top dollar for a subpar system instead of bottom dollar for a great system.

The last scenario is an installer trying so hard to be competitive that they are literally pricing themselves out of business. Businesses need margins to stay afloat.

If someone is pricing their system so low the margins are too small, they won’t be around for much longer.

To help:

By researching online, you find a lot about a company. You want to know how long they’ve been around. Who owns the company. Do they have good reviews?

It’s important to filter through reviews and find ones that have been left some months after the installation.
A review given the same day of the job is meaningless.

You want to know if they’ve had problems and how the company has treated them after the sale.

At the end of the day, buying solar is confusing.

Although companies may sell the same gear, it’s more important to focus on a high-quality installation. Installations should take a day or more for residential jobs. Shorter than this and companies may be cutting corners.
